Shift Log
An electronic replacement for operator log books to promote internal communication within and between shifts.
The Shift Log system allows a simple progression from manual log books to an electronic system. It provides a mechanism to view and record events and information relevant to the plant during a shift. These activities can be recorded as a comment or an issue pertaining to a specific area or the plant in general. The system captures and manages shift comments, but includes the functionality to record real-time values and KPI's, rolling threats, daily task lists, out of service equipment, and splash messages. It can also support the set up of a hierarchy of log books.
The key features of the Shift Log system are as follows :
- Log book configuration to fit your business. Log books can be configured for one or multiple areas. Each area can contain one or multiple units, which in turn, can be configured to contain one or multiple items of equipment. Operators and supervisors are assigned to one or multiple log books.
- Hierarchy of log books. Logs books can be configured in a hierarchy reflecting different personnel roles. For example; operator, superintendent, plant manager. Senior personnel use log books that can view, edit, and import comments from subordinate log books.
- Rolling Threats. Threats can be entered and set to roll across shifts until explicitly removed.
- Out of Service Equipment. Out of service equipment can be entered and set to roll across shifts.
- Daily Task Lists. The database stores daily tasks specific to areas. Each morning this list refreshes with tasks specific to the area.
- Handover reports. Handover reports can be generated at the end of each shift.
- Splash messages. Senior roles can create system wide or area targeted splash messages. Messages time out after a specified time.
- Easy printing. Reports can be easily printed from the system.
Shift Log is a grass roots tool to improve data visibility, security and communication in and between shifts. The four key of benefits of an electronic Shift Log system are:
- Capture – Within an operational group, Shift Log provides a facility for operators and supervisors to enter comments and ongoing issues related to a shift. This capture will permanently record shift information that would otherwise be prone to damage or loss with paper based notebooks and whiteboards.
- Manage – Log entries can be either formally approved or informally corrected by supervisors. The log system can also facilitate process improvements such as tracking of service request numbers against equipment problems.
- Communicate – Shift Log enables operators, coordinators and supervisors to communicate the events of a shift at shift handover, toolbox meetings and roster (back-to-back) handover. This facilitation includes both support for formal meetings, and a basis of handing over with an informal or even disconnected handover. Read only access across groups will also facilitate cross group communication.
- Discover – With shift details logged into the Shift Log system, supervisors, coordinators and operators can view past information easily. They can browse logs on a known day and shift, or they can perform a system wide search based on a number of criteria. Use of the system over time will build a knowledge base for feeding past events into current work practices.
Shift log is bi-directionally integrated with the BabelFish Foundation. Subject to security, comments for an area can be dragged from Shift Log and dropped onto BabelFish pages and trends. Any information available to BabelFish can also be presented in the Shift Log.
