BabelFish™ Portal

BabelFish™ Portal is a web-enabled software application, which is used to provide a simplified, integrated, and graphical view of production and operational data. There is no client side installation required so IT maintenance for upgrades and support is minimal.

Using a combination of open and custom interfaces, BabelFish™ Portal is able to provide a single view of all relevant data, irrespective of the source of the data, using dynamic web pages built by end users with minimal computing skills.

Access to any electronic data
Data sources accessible via BabelFish™ Portal include:

  • Real-time data from DCS and SCADA systems
  • Real-time and historical data from a plant historian such as Honeywell PHD, OSISoft PI, or Wonderware Industrial SQL
  • SAP, Maximo data
  • Laboratory data
  • Manually-entered production and operational figures
  • Production allocation and reporting data
  • Results of calculations
  • All types of documents, drawings and datasheets

Babelfish Portal
Babelfish™ Portal

BabelFish™ Portal is simply configured to link to relevant sources of data. BabelFish™ Portal “understands” the different types of data that exists, and does not need to duplicate information in a central database. It provides fast XML-based connectors to diverse data sources including historians, databases and documents.

Operating Envelopes
Every process has an operating envelope. The envelope typically consists of a set of fixed and dynamic constraints. The operating envelopes can be represented via advanced shapes, alarm limits, operating targets or a combination of these. Unlike control system alarming the operating envelopes can have a third dimension of time. For example the rate of change of the pressure drop across a key rundown heat exchanger can be indicated if it is exceeding a limit.

If the process moves outside of the envelope then specified users can be emailed, SMS or an indicator can change on the process overviews.

Typical applications of the operating envelopes are:

  • Key equipment monitoring, e.g. compressors
  • Environmental excursion monitoring
  • Changes in key KPIs over time
  • Alarm information and actions to be performed in the event of alarms
  • Process reasons for current alarm settings
  • Changes in alarm counts
