BabelFish™ offers a solution to the expensive industry problem of Enterprise Data Integration. Enterprise Data Integration (EDI) refers to the problem of allowing your business systems to share data. Most organisations maintain unique interfaces between systems leading to exponentially difficult (expensive) maintenance and development. Most processing plants have a number of different systems: 

• Real-time information systems (RTIS) 
• Lab systems 
• Documents and Drawing systems 
• Planning systems, SAP 
• Mass balance and reconciliation 
• Control systems, etc

BabelFish™ Data Broker provides a common "three pin XML plug" to an organisations data sources. Once a data source is connected to BabelFish™ via one of ISS adapters, any application connected to BabelFish™ can request that data via a common XML format.

Data Dictionary
The Data Dictionary describes the relationship between entities and groups information in a logical hierarchical structure so that you see a complete picture of an asset.

You can build an entire plant reference model with a hierarchical view of all Equipment, processes and measures connected into the data dictionary. This can be built up over time to leverage the information from all faculties of engineering within the operation.

The Data Dictionary defines all data connected to the integration layer. When ever a new data source is added to BabelFish™ the Data Dictionary updates itself. BabelFish™ does not store any data, it only access it from the source system when an application requests it.

Calculation Engine
Calculation Engine provides advanced calculation functionality that allows users combine existing data and derive new entities that aid in analysing existing data.

Calculations can involve other calculated entities or real-time values. The calculated fields behave exactly like other data for historical data access by a client application.

The ability to create complex calculations makes it possible to perform in-depth analysis of results such as performance and reliability indicators (i.e., KPI).
